Prevent Mold On Bathroom Walls

Mold is not only unattractive to look at but certain types of mold can also be unhealthy.  The most common place you’ll find mold growing is in your bathroom. Mold thrives on heat and moisture, making the bathroom a perfect breeding ground. Luckily, with a little perseverance you can prevent mold on bathroom walls.

If you do not already have an exhaust fan in your bathroom, you should have one installed. An exhaust fan will pull out some of the moisture that accumulates from the steam of your shower. You should let the fan continue to run for five to ten minutes after your shower to absorb as much moisture as possible.

Leaving the bathroom door open or a window open a little will also allow some of the moisture and heat to escape and create a cross ventilation instead of gathering on your bathroom walls and turning into mold.

Filling any holes or crevices with a silicone caulk will keep water out of those trouble areas and prevent mold from growing in the wall. Which will eventually grow on to the bathroom walls.

Towel drying the bathroom walls, shower walls and ceiling after your shower is another way to prevent mold from growing.

It’s also important to make sure all of the plumbing is working properly. A leaky faucet or cracked pipe can cause mold to grow at a rapid rate inside your walls and by the time the mold reaches your bathroom walls, you have a serious problem.

Semi-gross paint and ceramic tiles will also deter mold from growing on your bathroom walls.

Keep your bathroom toiletries in a cupboard instead of in the shower. Dry your bottles of shampoo and soap off and put them away. Toothbrush cup holders harbor moisture. Consider switching to a different method of storing your toothbrushes.

Leaving your wet wash clothes and towels hanging in the bathroom to dry should also be avoided. Hang them outside and when they are dry hang them back on the towel racks in the bathroom.

Extreme measures of preventing the growth of mold on your bathroom walls may be necessary. You may need an antifungal spray that you spray on the walls once or twice a month. A special paint is also available that is made with antimicrobial properties. Both of which discourage the growth of mold. (Not advised for households with small children)

If you notice mold growing on your bathroom walls you need to kill it quickly, this can be easily done by mixing one cup of chlorine bleach in a gallon of water. You’ll need gloves and protective eyewear, a scrub brush to scrub it off.  Rinse the moldy area with clean water and dry it.

You can also find several cleaning products that really do clean the walls and prevent the growth of mold. Many of which are all natural and safe around children and pets.

Preventing mold on your bathroom walls doesn’t have to be a daily, difficult chore. Just follow the simple advice above and your bathroom will sparkle, shine and most importantly be mold free.
